Rev James and Sophia McKeown (Late)

The Church of Pentecost: A Brief History

The Church of Pentecost, like many great institutions, began with humble origins. Its foundation is closely tied to the ministry of Pastor James McKeown (1900–1989), an Irish missionary sent by the Apostolic Church in Bradford, United Kingdom, to the Gold Coast (now Ghana) in 1937. He was tasked with assisting a group of believers of the Apostolic Faith, led by Rev. Peter Newman, who later founded Christ Apostolic Church in the town of Asamankese. In 1939, doctrinal differences surrounding divine healing led to a split within the group, resulting in the formation of two entities: Christ Apostolic Church and the Apostolic Church, Gold Coast. Under the leadership of Pastor James McKeown, the Apostolic Church, Gold Coast experienced significant growth. However, a constitutional crisis in 1953 led to the establishment of the Gold Coast Apostolic Church, with Pastor McKeown at the helm. Following Ghana’s independence in 1957, the Gold Coast Apostolic Church was renamed the Ghana Apostolic Church. Despite this change, internal conflicts continued. In response to these challenges, and following advice from the then President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the leadership of the Ghana Apostolic Church was encouraged to adopt a new name to foster peace and unity within the Pentecostal movement. On August 1, 1962, the Church officially adopted its new name, The Church of Pentecost, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its growth and mission. Since then, The Church of Pentecost has experienced remarkable growth under the leadership of various leaders, continuing to serve and impact communities both locally and internationally.

We believe that the healing of sicknesses and diseases is provided for God’s people in the atonement (Isaiah 53:4,5; Matthew 8:7-13; 16,17; Mark 16:17,18; Luke 13:10-16; Acts 10:38; James 5:14-16). However, the Church is not opposed to medication by qualified medical practitioners.
